What is an Orientation?

An orientation is training designed to introduce employees to a company’s culture, policies, procedures, and systems.  It also provides employees with important health and safety information, along with any training required for specific tasks. Orientations help employers set expectations of how a company operates.

Why do you need an orientation program?

Orientations are used to help employees feel welcome and prepare them for their jobs. Being in a new work environment can be overwhelming, especially when you do not know the rules, expectations, or who to contact for help. Orientations give everyone a clear understanding of what the company is about, their role, and how they can succeed. A good orientation program makes people feel more confident, reduces mistakes, and helps them start their work on the right foot. This benefits both the employee and the company.

Different individuals within the workplace may be responsible for various aspects of the orientation to ensure that the correct information is available.
