MTA Scholarship Awards

The Manitoba Trucking Association is pleased to support the future of our industry. Every year, the MTA, through the generous support of the Associated Trades Division and Vehicle Maintenance Council, offers thousands of dollars in awards and scholarships to deserving individuals. Awards are offered in two categories: academic awards, and apprenticeship awards. These awards are available only to employees or dependents of employees of Manitoba Trucking Association member companies.  Details of each award are listed below.

 

Associated Trades Division Scholarship

(3 scholarships of $1000 each, for first year tuition assistance)

Since 1986, the Manitoba Trucking Association has offered scholarships for the dependents of employees of member companies. These awards are open to dependent children of employees of MTA member companies. The Manitoba Trucking Association and the Associated Trades Division is pleased to be able to reward scholastic excellence and assist these students in furthering their education.

Larry Seel Memorial Scholarship

($1000, for first year tuition assistance)

Larry Seel was a longtime member and active supporter of the Manitoba Trucking Association.  We are honoured to offer the Larry Seel Memorial Scholarship to a recent high school graduate (graduated in the current school year) who is continuing their education through university or college.  Applicants must demonstrate volunteerism, community engagement or participation in school activities.  Consideration will first be given to those who have not received an academic scholarship from the MTA.

Rick Geller Memorial Scholarship

($1000, for professional development)

It is our privilege to offer the Rick Geller Memorial Scholarship.  Rick Geller was actively involved with the Manitoba Trucking Association until his passing in 2023.  He was dedicated to safety in the industry.

We are excited to announce that for the next three years, we will be offering TWO scholarships in honour of Rick!  One award is sponsored by the Associated Trades Division, and the second award is sponsored by Tim Lucko, Rick’s longtime business partner with GL Transport Consulting.

These scholarships will support the professional development of an employee of an MTA member company.  Preference will be given to those working in a field related to Safety, as well as to those who have not received a scholarship from the ATD in the past.

Truck Transport Mechanic

Each year, two $1000 scholarships are awarded to MTA member company employees in the Manitoba Truck and Transport Mechanic division:

  • one, $1,000 award for the individual who achieves the highest marks on his or her level 1 examinations in the Manitoba Truck Transport Mechanic division;
  • one, $1,000 award for the individual who achieves the highest marks on his or her level 2 examinations in the Manitoba Truck Transport Mechanic division

To apply, we ask that eligible program participants or employers of eligible program participants submit the letter of marks received from Apprenticeship Manitoba to Danielle at the MTA office not later than July 15, 2024.  Please contact Danielle if you have any questions about this process.

Transport Trailer Technician

 

Effective in 2021, the awards program for Transport Trailer Technicians has been expanded.  There will be:

  • two awards of $1,500 each for Transport Trailer Technician, Level 1,
  • two awards of $1,500 each for Transport Trailer Technician, Level  2, and
  • one $2000 award for Transport Trailer Technician, Level 3.

To apply, we ask that eligible program participants or employers of eligible program participants submit the letter of marks received from Apprenticeship Manitoba to Danielle at the MTA office not later than July 15, 2024.  Please contact Danielle if you have any questions about this process.

Other Scholarships

The Motor Vehicle Industry of Manitoba (MVIM) provides scholarships for students and apprentices  that are journeying toward Red Seal Certification in the automotive and heavy-duty sector.  MVIM now has two scholarships designated to Truck Transport Technician.
